Organizers said that last year’s exhibition there by Simone Leigh cost about $7 million. But curators say financial support from the State Department has not kept pace with the increases. “We consider private-sector support a strength in our approach to this program, as it creates broad engagement with a wide variety of stakeholders,” a spokesman for the State Department said. “I think there is an understanding even before a selection is made that if you apply, then you have the ability to fundraise,” said Brooke Kamin Rapaport, artistic director and chief curator at Madison Square Park Conservancy and the commissioner of the $3.8 million Venice exhibition by the sculptor Martin Puryear in 2019. Robert Storr, who directed the 2007 Venice Biennale and is a former dean of the Yale School of Art, said the rising costs of shipping and other logistics make the system unsustainable.

Like many other Black Protestant churches, Calvary Baptist struggled economically during the coronavirus pandemic. But the church has transformed its parking lot to accommodate game-day fundraisers, with volunteers from the congregation staffing the lots and selling spaces for $15 per vehicle. All 250 parking spaces at the Calvary lot were full when Messi’s Inter Miami played the Union. Sometimes, rival fans park at the church. The church parking lot is often full on game days.

Rite Aid filed plans to close 154 stores on Monday as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rite Aid is the smallest of the three major drugstore chains, well behind CVS and Walgreens. Rite Aid was expected to close stores as part of its bankruptcy. LONDON (AP) — British police have opened an investigation into corporate manslaughter at a northern England hospital after a neonatal nurse was convicted of murdering seven babies and trying to kill six others when she worked there, authorities said Wednesday. The investigation will consider “areas including senior leadership and decision making to determine whether any criminality has taken place,” said Simon Blackwell, detective superintendent at Cheshire Constabulary. Former nurse Lucy Letby, 33, was convicted in August of killing seven newborns in the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England between June 2015 and June 2016. Prosecutors said she sickened the babies by injecting intravenous lines with air, poisoning some with insulin and force-feeding others milk. It said it couldn't provide any details, because the inquiry was at an early stage.

The tale provides an unlikely, ghastly background to the original 1858 ambrotype created during the future nation-saving Civil War president's ascendancy, an image which the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has added to its collection, officials said Tuesday. “Original images of Abraham Lincoln are extraordinarily rare, and images with a fascinating back story like this are even more rare," said Christina Shutt, executive director of the library and museum. Members of the media work near a large screen showing a picture of convicted hospital nurse Lucy Letby, ahead of her sentencing, outside the Manchester Crown Court, in Manchester, Britain, August 21, 2023. However, the jury were unable to agree on six charges of attempted murder involving five other infants. At a hearing at Manchester Crown Court, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced they would now seek a new trial over one of those charges, with the trial date provisionally set for next year. "These decisions on whether to seek retrials on the remaining counts of attempted murder were extremely complex and difficult," said Jonathan Storer, a chief crown prosecutor. Earlier this month, lawyers for Letby, who maintains her innocence, submitted an application seeking permission for an appeal against her convictions.

The Pennsylvania jail from which convicted murderer Danilo Cavalcante brazenly escaped, eluding searchers for two weeks, plans to enclose its exercise yards with walls and a roof and make inmates wear brighter uniforms, along with other security improvements. The Chester County jail board unanimously approved plans Wednesday to fully enclose the exercise yards at the facility in Pocopson, southwest of Philadelphia. The redesign plan calls for fully enclosed exercise yards, with 18-foot-high masonry walls to replace fencing, and the removal of shed roofs that could inmates could scale. The design notably blocks overhead sunlight into the yard, save for a small ribbon of windows at the top with secure screening. Cavalcante was charged with escape after his capture, and his next hearing in that case is scheduled for Wednesday.

They thought they had him cornered. Danelo Cavalcante, facing life in prison for murder, had shimmied his way out of the Chester County jail on Aug. 31 and was on the run in exurbs of eastern Pennsylvania. Local and state police set up a perimeter around the expanse where they suspected Mr. Cavalcante was hiding out. It might take a while, but they had him penned in, they thought. Just before midnight the next day, Mr. Cavalcante broke into a house, apparently in search of provisions.

The nationwide online poll, which concluded on Thursday, showed that almost 30% of respondents were very interested in getting the vaccine and another 24% were somewhat interested. U.S. public health officials earlier this week recommended updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer (PFE.N)/BioNTech (22UAy.DE) and Moderna (MRNA.O) that target a recently circulating Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Almost 42% said they were mainly interested in getting the vaccine to reduce their risk of severe illness. During the last revaccination campaign, when most Americas had either already had the COVID virus or been previously vaccinated, only around 56.5 million people got the updated booster shots, CDC data shows. The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online and nationwide between Sept. 8 and Sept. 14, gathering responses from 4,413 U.S. adults.

Sept 13 (Reuters) - A convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania jail last month was recaptured on Wednesday after eluding an expanding manhunt for weeks and unnerving residents in the suburbs west of Philadelphia, state police said on social media. School districts canceled classes for a day after Cavalcante was seen on security-camera video on a public garden trail. More than a week after his escape, he stole a van and drove about 25 miles (40 km) before abandoning the vehicle. He also stole a rile from a garage as the owner of the house who fired several shots at him. After his escape from the county jail, authorities had offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

After nearly two weeks of combing the cornfields and dense woods of Chester County, Pa., with hundreds of law enforcement officers and a battery of drones, dogs and helicopters, the capture itself took about five minutes. A little after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, in a densely wooded area of South Coventry Township, a team of officers quietly surrounded Danelo Cavalcante, 34, who had broken out of Chester County Prison, where he was being held after he was convicted of murdering his former girlfriend. He was taken by surprise, officials said, and tried to crawl away through the underbrush, but a search dog caught him. “Subject is in custody,” an officer radioed to dispatchers at 8:16 a.m. “Confirmed, subject is in custody.”So ended a manhunt that had unnerved communities all over Chester County, an affluent suburb of Philadelphia, and even rattled people back in Mr. Cavalcante’s home country of Brazil, where he is wanted in connection with a 2017 killing.

A convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison and spent two weeks hiding in woods and fields was captured this morning, ending an extensive manhunt through Philadelphia’s western suburbs. The fugitive, Danelo Cavalcante, was apprehended after an alarm went off at a house in a wooded area of Chester County. A federal law enforcement aircraft, which was involved in the search, detected a nearby “heat signal,” and closed in on Cavalcante in a wooded area about 15 miles north of Chester County Prison, which he had escaped from on Aug. 31. “They had the element of surprise,” Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police said. “Cavalcante did not realize he was surrounded.”Cavalcante tried to crawl away through thick underbrush with his stolen rifle, Bivens said, but a federal agent released a dog, which chased and “subdued” him, and left him with a “minor bite wound.” The officers moved in and Cavalcante, though still resisting, was taken into custody with no shots fired.

A convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania jail and eluded hundreds of law enforcement officers for almost two weeks in quiet, wooded communities outside Philadelphia has been recaptured, the authorities said on Wednesday morning. Officials were expected to release more details later in the morning. The manhunt grew in size and urgency as the days unfolded, becoming especially pressing after Mr. Cavalcante stole a rifle from a garage on the night of Sept. 11. Officials, who had considered him a dangerous fugitive all along, warned that he was “desperate enough” to use the gun. Over the course of the search, Mr. Cavalcante was spotted numerous times, the authorities said, by people in the area and also in the infrared glare of residential security cameras at night.
